There is lots to see and do in Wellington in the summer, and if you’re a lover of contemporary art, check out these art exhibitions this summer.
Page Blackie Gallery
Page Blackie Gallery showcases some of New Zealand’s best contemporary art from local artists, as well as historic art. The gallery has been open in on Victoria Street in Wellington for 25 years and is home to many fantastic artists and artwork. Check out the gallery this summer for an exhibit from John Walsh hosted this July. His interesting, dreamlike use of colour has a mystical and spiritual vibe that is both heavy and gentle at the same time. His scenes convey both landscape and figures that display powerful messages about nature and the environment. A must see when you are in Wellington.
Take a stroll along Cuba Street and you’ll find Enjoy Gallery. Enjoy Gallery is a huge proponent of contemporary art in every form. They particularly like to promote new and rising artists that have challenging and unique ideas. Take a look at work from Ella Sutherland this summer, which focuses on printed and mechanical forms of contemporary art like typography, to explore art in an unusual form.
The Dowse Art Museum
For contemporary art in craft and design, look no further than The Dowse Art Museum. Located at Laings Road, this contemporary gallery celebrates the more physical side of art, with a focus on sculptures, crafts, and textiles. This summer, explore exhibitions from Elisabeth Pointin, Shannon Te Ao, and Nuku Tewhatewa that explore many different aspects of life, nature, environment, and human beings. There are also permanent exhibitions you can visit all year round as well as many workshops that are held during the summer months that families and their children can enjoy this season.
